We caught up with Kent based heavy rock band, Crashgate on the lead up to their set at Alt Fest to talk music inspiration, band antics and future plans.
Formed in 2011 in Deal, Kent the Crashgate boys are closer to a family than just a band. After the release of their debut EP in October 2012 Crashgate attracted worldwide interest and have continued with their quest to get their name known.
Having played numerous shows, the band are set to take the show by storm at this year’s Alt Fest. Here’s what they had to say for themselves.
The Alt Entertainer (TAE): Describe Crashgate in 3 words?
Crashgate (CG): Mad, family and driven
TAE: How did you first form?
CG: Crashgate were formed in early 2011 from well established musicians in and around Deal, Kent. After some very shaky startings with a few lineup changes the band started writing and composing their music trying to make songs that they were proud of and one which would capture the ears of their fans.
TAE: How would you describe your sound?
CG: Aggressive, energetic and furious.
TAE: Where did your name come from?
CG: Our name came from a link with Craig’s (our vocalist) occupation. We Couldn’t decide on a name. So someone suggested something linked to Craig’s work. Whilst at Thanet he went past Manston airport and saw a ‘Crashgate’. It’s an emergency access point or movable gate/barrier. The name was Crashgate28 but we dropped the 28 part.
TAE: Who are your music inspirations?
CG: Alter Bridge, Shinedown, Black Stone Cherry, Nirvana, Down, Pantera, Metallica, Alice in Chains, Deftones, 12 Stones, Godsmack, Guns N’ Roses, Nickelback, 5 Finger Death Punch.
TAE: What’s the craziest thing that’s ever happened to you as a band?
CG: Craziest Thing to date. For our album launch there was no power, I don’t know what went wrong but some mega fuse died somewhere (nah it was really a substation in the next street which blew) which meant we didn’t have any electricity. But did we decide to call it quits and do our album launch on another day? No, instead we paid for a generator and ran cables and lighting to all areas of the Astor theatre in Deal, to keep our own album launch afloat.
We were the only place that had power that night and it was awesome. We also used pyro which was cool but it was so unorganized and unrehearsed and we had a lot of close shaves that night. Apart from Shaun who pulled a ‘Hetfield’ and took one to the face, but he was fine!
TAE: Which one of your songs is the most popular?
CG: Tear it Down, which is our latest single.
TAE: What are your plans for the next couple of years?
CG: This year we go on our first tour throughout most of the UK, hitting up Lincoln, Doncaster, Manchester, Leeds, Sheffield, Tamworth, Stoke-on-Trent and Derby. We then have some local home shows and TBFM’s Birthday bash in May. Before we make our appearance at the awesomeness that is Alt Fest. At the end of the year the plan is to wind it down and get to writing again. Next year the plan so far is to tour again, maybe make it to Europe and then start working on the next album!
