Birmingham Royal Ballet triple bill – Lighthouse Poole

It was a packed house with not a seat to spare as the music started up for the Birmingham Royal Ballet’s triple bill. Complete with 2 intervals the short ballets did not disappoint.

Opening with: ‘Les Rendezvous’

Originally written in 1933 this piece by Frederick Ashton was delightful, loosely based around friends meeting in the park. The pretty frilly outfits on the girls and mock suit outfits on the boys made it feel like it was from a bygone era. It boasted gentle flirting and kissing among the participants, beautifully crafted dance among both the groups and stunning solo dances.

This performance was followed by ‘Kin’ which had a completely different feel from the first. Opening with jarring music, the cast were all dressed in black. This new ballet by Alexander Whitley has echoes of contemporary dance superbly performed by this professional company. The girl dance group performing in contemporary form were followed by an amazing pair who were athletic and poetic.  The boys offered an equally contemporary performance which was a little menacing. Alexander, a former Birmingham Royal Ballet dancer should be proud of this new offering as it offered a complete contrast to the first performance.

‘Elite Syncopations’

The dancer’s outfits were wonderfully colourful, and they acted out a dancing contest gathering. This brilliantly choreographed piece was by Kenneth McMillan, with an equally amazing soundtrack by Scott Joplin to accompany it.

It was dazzling to see the dancers perform in their groups and showcase their individual performances in a way rarely shown. The final performance was the icing on the cake that truly topped off an entertaining evening which I would recommend to anybody. I loved the spectacle and enjoyed the variety the evening offered and I think that this is one ballet that shouldn’t be missed out on.
